#kenya: *GOV'T SHUTS ALL QUARRY ACTIVITIES IN MANDERA FOLLOWING AL-SHABAAB THREATS*
The Kenyan government has suspended all quarrying activities in Mandera County following a series of violent incidents linked to Al-Shabaab militants.
The most recent trigger was the abduction of two quarry workers in Shimbir Fatuma on June 19, 2025. This came just weeks after several other deadly attacks, including the killing of five workers in April.
Mandera County Commissioner Henry Ochako cited intelligence reports indicating planned attacks on quarry workers, prompting the immediate shutdown to prevent further casualties.
The suspension will remain in place until adequate security measures are developed in collaboration with quarry owners and local security committees.
