Zimbabwe's Commitment to Gender Equality Cabinet Approves National Gender Policy 2025
In a significant move toward promoting gender equality and women's empowerment, His Excellency President Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa chaired the Seventeenth Cabinet Meeting on June 17, 2025, where the proposed National Gender Policy was considered and approved. This landmark policy reflects Zimbabwe's dedication to addressing gender disparities by recognizing the diversity of various groups and challenging stereotypes about gender roles. The National Gender Policy (2025) aligns with regional, continental, and global frameworks that advocate for gender equality, as well as the Constitution of Zimbabwe, which forbids discrimination based on sex, gender, disability, and marital status.
The objectives of the National Gender Policy are multifaceted, aiming to promote gender equality and equity across all sectors. It sets national priorities, provides a guiding framework for gender mainstreaming, and strengthens coordinated planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of gender-related programs. Key principles underpinning the policy include promoting equality and non-discrimination, ensuring inclusivity for persons with disabilities, respecting cultural practices, and involving men in gender discussions.
To effectively address gender-related challenges, the policy identifies ten priority goals. These encompass essential areas such as Legal Justice and Constitutional Rights, Gender Balanced Leadership, Economic Empowerment, and Health Resilience. Each goal is supported by a thorough situational analysis of existing gender issues and will be equipped with clear objectives and strategies to promote progress. As these objectives are pursued, they are expected to serve as catalysts for broader socio-economic development, fostering a more equitable society for all Zimbabweans.
