NYC Emergency Management
June 3, 2025 at 08:06 PM
@NYSDEC and @HealthNYGov have issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for Wednesday, June 4 for the New York City Metro and Lower Hudson Valley regions. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is forecast to reach 105, which is classified as Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups, due to elevated levels of ground-level ozone.
Air quality concerns affect everyone. Children, older adults, and people with heart or lung conditions should take extra precautions. For more information and guidance, visit nyc.gov/airquality.
Ground-level ozone forms when sunlight triggers a chemical reaction between nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These pollutants are released by motor vehicles, construction equipment, industrial facilities, electric utilities, gasoline vapors, and chemical solvents. Although these sources do not emit ozone directly, they release the compounds that create it, particularly in hot and sunny weather.
Reducing fossil fuel use and limiting vehicle traffic are effective ways to prevent ozone formation and protect public health.
• Use public transportation, carpool, walk, or bike instead of driving alone
• Set your thermostat lower in winter and higher in summer to reduce energy use
• Choose electric vehicles, lawn equipment, and tools when available
• Avoid burning trash and keep campfires to a minimum
