Russia Finds It Increasingly Difficult to Replenish Its Army Due to Economic Problems
Russia has already lost over a million troops, trading strategic assets for tactical gains, and will face even greater difficulties with its "unstable model" of military formation, including due to economic problems.
This assessment was provided by George Barros, head of the Russia and Geospatial Intelligence Team at the Institute for the Study of War.
"It’s unclear where Russia will find another million people. Russia’s model of force generation doesn’t seem particularly sustainable in the long term because it relies on voluntary service with very high compensation," Barros noted.
The current one-time enlistment bonus in the Russian army exceeds $30,000. However, Russia’s economy is "experiencing serious shocks in fiscal and monetary macroeconomic policy due to this unsustainable model."
