As part of its ongoing commitment to driving inclusive, tech-driven urban transformation, innovation and global collaboration, MDEC proudly led Malaysia’s presence at the Smart City Expo LATAM Congress 2025 in Puebla, Mexico. Anchoring the visit was the official promotion of Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL2025)—to be held on 17–19 September 2025, through a dedicated exhibition booth.
This initiative reinforces Malaysia’s position as a leading voice in smart city development in Southeast Asia and aims to build international bridges with partners across Latin America. SCEKL 2025 will serve as a regional link for public-private partnerships, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, and urban sustainability through community empowerment, offering a platform for Latin American stakeholders to collaborate with Malaysian tech players and policy leaders.
Tengku Azrul Tengku Azhar, Director of Digital Regulatory & Sustainability at MDEC, shared Malaysia’s perspective during a panel on “Technological Innovation at the Service of Inclusive Development.” He highlighted how human-centred, AI-driven city initiatives are helping address structural inequalities and create opportunities for underserved communities, aligning with Latin America’s vision for socially-driven smart cities.
At the Leaders Forum Lounge, Tengku Azrul also presented Malaysia’s AI City Initiative, which aims to harness AI to enhance urban efficiency and improve quality of life.
Nizam Rosli, MDEC’s Lead for Global Alliances, introduced the theme of Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025—“AI Cities: Shaping our Digital Future”, and outlined collaboration opportunities for Mexican municipalities, exhibitors, and tech players in ASEAN’s innovation ecosystem.
MDEC’s participation reflects a shared commitment between Malaysia and Mexico to co-create resilient, tech-enabled cities. As momentum builds toward SCEKL 2025, we welcome global changemakers to Kuala Lumpur to drive forward meaningful innovation and partnerships.
