🌸 Reflections on In-Law Relationships in Light of Islam 🌸 It was eye-opening to learn that even the concept of sasural (in-laws) is addressed in the Qur’an, under the category of ulul qurba—close family ties. Allah ﷻ has not left this delicate relationship unaddressed. He has guided us on how to behave as daughters-in-law, mothers-in-law, and other in-law roles with dignity and responsibility. As women, we must understand that our behaviors carry immense weight in building peaceful homes. A mother-in-law should not treat her daughter-in-law exactly like her daughter—because a daughter may forget harsh words, but a daughter-in-law might not. And a young bride, just 18 or 19, cannot be expected to show the wisdom of a 40-year-old. Mistakes will happen—respond with gentleness. Daughters-in-law, too, should learn the art of winning hearts—offering tea, sharing simple joys, and respecting elders. Avoid gossiping about your in-laws to your husband; instead, win his heart by showing love and respect to his family. In today’s time, we’ve shifted from one extreme (never leaving your in-laws’ home) to another (leave at the first sign of discomfort). Islam teaches us the middle path—with sabr, good character, and balance. Let us raise our daughters with soft skills, not just degrees—teaching them to sacrifice, to share, and to win hearts with akhlaaq. May Allah guide us all to create homes full of peace, love, and barakah. 🤍
