On this day in 1865, the last enslaved Black Americans finally won their freedom. More than two months after the end of the Civil War and nearly two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, emancipation had finally reached Galveston, Texas.
Juneteenth is a reminder that freedom isn’t achieved overnight — and the fight for freedom, equality, and justice for all Pennsylvanians isn’t over.
It’s up to each of us to do the hard and necessary work of advancing real freedom for every single Pennsylvanian. I believe we can rise to that challenge.
Happy Juneteenth, Pennsylvania.
