The residents of Ìgbómìnà, a Yoruba community in Southern Kwara State, are raising an urgent alarm over the escalating insecurity gripping their region. Across Kwara South, including Ekiti, Oke-Ero, Isin, Irepodun, and Ifelodun Local Government Areas, communities face near-daily kidnappings, rendering roads unsafe, forcing farmers to abandon their lands, and leaving residents unable to sleep peacefully. The situation is equally dire in Kwara North, yet these crises remain underreported by mainstream media. Concerns are mounting over the state government’s inaction and lack of transparency regarding the utilization of security votes. Questions arise: what would it cost the state to employ hundreds of vigilantes per local government to bolster security? Unfortunately, there is a lack of accountability for state governors, with public focus often misdirected toward the Federal Government while those responsible for implementing effective local security measures are not held to task. Immediate action, including local security initiatives and greater transparency, is critical to restoring peace and safety across Kwara State.
