🔐 Tinubu Pushes for State Police: Calls for Constitutional Overhaul to Tackle Insecurity President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for urgent constitutional reforms to establish state police, describing it as a "national imperative" to combat Nigeria’s deepening security crisis. Speaking through Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru at a legislative dialogue in Abuja on June 16, Tinubu said the centralized police model is outdated. He urged lawmakers to move policing to the Concurrent Legislative List—allowing states to create their own police forces with federal oversight. Tinubu cited terrorism, cybercrime, and farmer-herder conflicts as key issues demanding localized, community-driven security solutions. He also highlighted border security concerns and praised efforts like the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre. House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu supported the call, urging swift constitutional review. However, IGP Kayode Egbetokun opposed the idea, arguing for a stronger, unified Nigeria Police Force instead. The debate marks a turning point in Nigeria’s security conversation.
