Main Theme: Exhibiting Allah’s perfect dominion and power to instill reverence and fear of Him and as a warning against opposing Him and earning His punishment. As such, it is recommended to recite it every night.
It is named “The Dominion” because it opens with the sanctification of Allah, to whom belongs the dominion and sovereignty and who has power over everything, and mentions matters that can only pertain to one with complete sovereignty and absolute control, which is Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى).
Objectives of the Sūrah:
• Mentioning many of Allah’s magnificent attributes, such as His unique sovereignty and complete power, the creation of the heavens with utmost precision, adorning them with bright stars, reminding of the grace of creating the terrestrial world, the precision of its system and its suitability for human life, all of which is evidence of Allah’s oneness in divinity.
• Warning people against the plots of devils, clarifying that salvation is in following the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) and loss is in denying him, alerting the obstinate to Allah’s knowledge encompassing all creatures, and comparing the fates of disbelievers and believers, following the Qur’ānic method of combining intimidation and encouragement.
• Discouraging the polytheists from relying on idols for support or sustenance, rebuking them for denying Allah’s grace and hastening the Prophet’s (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) death, and threatening them with the punishments of this world and the torment of the hereafter.
