Its the school holidays and many families are going on vacation overseas! Few weeks back in Parliament, I raised the importance of ensuring Singapore’s preparedness for large-scale influenza outbreaks, especially as cases spike in the region. I asked MOH to elaborate on our updated pandemic response plan — specifically, how we are equipping ourselves to handle sudden surges in infections and maintaining adequate healthcare capacity in such scenarios. This issue hits close to home. In Yio Chu Kang, we’ve seen how proactive vaccination efforts can help protect our seniors and vulnerable residents. That’s why we’ve been working with partners and donors to provide free flu vaccinations for our elderly. I was heartened that the Ministry acknowledged the need to improve awareness and outreach for flu vaccinations, drawing on the lessons from our COVID-19 experience. It's not just about healthcare infrastructure — it's also about empowering residents to take preventive action, especially since influenza is seasonal and requires ongoing vigilance. We all play a role — whether it’s reminding our parents to get their annual flu shot, practising good hygiene, or encouraging our neighbours to seek timely care.
