Why retire wisdom when it’s still got plenty to offer? In Parliament, I spoke up for a group close to my heart—our senior workers. Many in Yio Chu Kang have shared their struggles with staying active in the workforce despite having years of experience and the willingness to contribute. As Singapore’s population ages, we must not see this as a challenge alone—but as an opportunity to redefine what it means to age with purpose. I’ve long believed that our seniors carry a wealth of resilience, skills, and mentorship. The numbers, however, tell a worrying story—many still earn below $2,500 monthly and face underemployment. It’s clear: we’re not fully tapping into their potential. I’ve called for tailored upskilling programmes that go beyond generic training, pushing for flexible job redesigns that take into account our seniors’ real strengths. Whether it’s supporting their entry into the gig economy or ensuring fair wages that reflect their contributions, we need to remove barriers, not create more. I also urged employers to go beyond compliance—true age-friendliness must be felt on the ground, with hybrid work, job-sharing, and flexible hours becoming the new norm, not the rare perk. To the Government and our tripartite partners, I said this: Let’s go beyond incentives. Let’s build strategic partnerships with businesses to create new pathways for meaningful employment. The Senior Employment Credit has helped, but we can be bolder in our ambitions.
