Is Poverty Really Falling Fast in India? A New Study Says… Not Quite.
From 2004-05 to 2011-12, India made big progress—poverty dropped from 37% to 22%. But what happened after that?
A new study published in Economic and Political Weekly shows that poverty reduction has slowed down sharply in the last decade. Between 2011-12 and 2022-23, poverty may have dropped by just 4%, from 22% to around 18%.
Here’s what’s making things complicated:
🔸 No official poverty data since 2011-12
🔸 New surveys use different methods, making comparisons tricky
🔸 Slower GDP and wage growth, especially in rural areas
🔸 Some states like UP improved, but others like Bihar and Maharashtra lag behind

Experts disagree:
➡️ Some say poverty is under-reported due to data changes
➡️ Others argue it’s much lower now thanks to government schemes and economic growth
The bottom line? India’s fight against poverty needs better data, smarter policies, and more attention to struggling states.
