🧫⚠️ Potassium (K⁺) levels can be falsely elevated due to hemolysis!
🩸 When red blood cells rupture during or after collection, they release intracellular potassium into the serum or plasma.
🚨 Causes of hemolysis include:
• Using a small needle gauge
• Excessive force during blood draw
• Vigorous shaking of the tube
• Delayed separation of serum/plasma
❗ Falsely high K⁺ = Misleading diagnosis (e.g., pseudohyperkalemia)
Always repeat critical results with a non-hemolyzed sample!
📌 Proper phlebotomy = Reliable electrolytes ⚖️
