In a statement, the AUT declared that the University of Zimbabwe has “lost its integrity, its credibility, and its reputation.” The association pointed to what it called the “one-day learning and exam farce” as merely a symptom of a much larger, insidious scheme designed to “churn out students who are not educated, but merely certified.” The lecturers did not spare senior academic staff, accusing chairpersons and deans of complicity in this “charade” and “travesty,” asserting that they have abandoned their duty to uphold the highest educational standards. The AUT statement read: “The students are being sold fake degrees, degrees that are not worth the paper they are printed on.
