al-Khuraybī reported that Sufyān said: “Be wary of wrath of Allah with regards to three things: الخُرَيْبِيُّ: عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، قَالَ: احْذَرْ سَخَطَ اللهِ فِي ثَلاَثٍ: That you fall short of what He commands you to do. That He sees you displeased with what He has alloted to you (of worldly benefits). That you seek something in this world and fail to get it, then you begin to be angry with your Lord.” Khālid b. Nizār al-Aylī reported that Sufyān (al-Thawrī) said: al-zuhd (ie: asceticism) is of two categories: قَالَ خَالِدُ بنُ نِزَارٍ الأَيْلِيُّ: قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: الزُّهْدُ زُهْدَانِ: “zuhd farīḍah (ie: (abstaining from what is obligatory for you to abstain from)), and zuhd nāfilah (ie: abstaining from what is not obligatory for you to abstain from), زُهْدُ فَرِيْضَةٍ، وَزُهْدُ نَافِلَةٍ. (zuhd) farīḍah is for you to abstain from: pride, arrogance, domination, al-riyāʾ (ie: showing off with past and present deeds), and adorning oneself before the people (with the intention of boasting). As for zuhd al-nāfilah: it is for you to abstain from what Allah has granted you of al-ḥalāl (ie: lawful provisions). When you shun any of such then it becomes imperative on you that you shun it not because of anyone else but Allah.”
