Amanda Mushate explores maternal bonds through art

HARARE – The National Gallery of Zimbabwe is proud to present “Ingoma KaMama Wami”, the debut solo exhibition by rising artist Amanda Mushate. Officially opening to the public on June 13, 2025 and running until 18 August 2025, the exhibition marks a significant milestone in Mushate’s career as she transitions from emerging talent to an artist of growing maturity. Her latest body of work features a compelling mix of paintings and synthetic sculptures, with a central focus on maternal and filial relationships.
Mushate’s artistic expression is deeply rooted in the emotional and psychological nuances of family bonds, particularly between mothers and daughters. Her work seeks to challenge the societal norms that often demand emotional restraint and conformity. In doing so, she brings to light the silent traumas and pressures many individuals endure in their attempt to meet these expectations. The exhibition, therefore, becomes not just a visual experience, but a therapeutic journey—inviting audiences to reflect on the emotional weight carried across generations.
By addressing generational curses and the societal repression of emotional expression, Mushate’s art offers a form of redress—akin to spiritual or emotional healing. Her use of emotive compositions and symbolism calls attention to the cultural concept of “ngozi”, where unresolved ancestral wrongs necessitate reconciliation. In this light, Mushate assumes a mediatory role, both within her work and in her own life as a mother, offering her creations as gestures of corrective intent.……Full story on www.masvingomirror.com
