*Message to Mbira Players*
• *Unity and Respect:*
Mbira players should work together as a family, avoiding divisions and promoting mutual respect. This unity is crucial in preserving the cultural significance of Mbira playing.
• *Cultural Preservation:*
Mbira players should focus on preserving their cultural heritage by playing traditional music and avoiding external influences like guitar beats. This helps maintain the authenticity and spiritual connection of Mbira music.
• *Personal Conduct:*
Mbira players should uphold a dignified personal conduct, reflecting the instrument`s cultural significance and deep roots in ancestral respect. This entails avoiding behaviours that may tarnish the reputation of the craft, such as prostitution, which violates human dignity. Instead, mbira players should prioritize *personal hygiene and cleanliness (physically and spiritually),* ensuring they present themselves respectfully, especially during ceremonies and performances. In line with *Ubuntu/Hunhuism,* a philosophy emphasizing community, respect, and interconnectedness, mbira players are expected to embody values such as follows:
1. *Respect for Ancestors*
Demonstrating reverence for ancestors and acknowledging the spiritual significance of the mbira in communicating with ancestral spirits.
2. *Community-oriented*
Prioritizing community well-being and using their craft to promote social cohesion and cultural identity.
3. *Integrity and Dignity*
Conducting themselves with integrity, avoiding behaviours that may bring shame or dishonour to themselves, their community, or the craft, while fostering a positive reputation for mbira music.
• *Inclusivity:*
Mbira music should be accessible to everyone, with songs that cater to all age groups. This inclusivity helps promote the cultural values and traditions associated with Mbira playing.
• *Spiritual Connection*
Mbira players should strive to connect with their ancestral spirits, especially during Bira ceremonies. This spiritual connection is vital in maintaining the cultural significance and traditional values of Mbira music.
*Discography*
Chinhamora and Ngomakurira are excited to announce that they`re working on a new recording project, with studio sessions scheduled soon. The upcoming album, titled “Dzimbahwe on the Way”, promises to be a significant milestone in their musical journey. To bring this project to life, they are seeking funding and sponsorship opportunities.
*Chinamora`s Message*
1. *Respecting Our Heritage:*
As Zimbabweans, cherishing our cultural music and values is crucial for building a brighter future. Our heritage provides essential life skills, such as respect for the elders and leadership, while promoting environmental stewardship. Through embracing our traditions, we can foster a sense of community and cultural identity. Zimbabwe`s rich musical heritage, including Mbira music, plays a significant role in shaping our values and traditions. Mbira music, with its spiritual significance and intricate polyrhythms, is an integral part of Shona culture, serving as a means of storytelling, preserving history, and folklore, and connecting the community with ancestral spirits. Our cultural values emphasize respect for elders, leadership, and the environment, which are vital for promoting social cohesion and responsible citizenship. Through preserving and promoting our cultural heritage, we can ensure the continuation of these values and traditions. Furthermore, traditional music and dance have significantly influenced modern Zimbabwean music, with many contemporary artists drawing inspiration from traditional rhythms and melodies. This blend of traditional and modern sounds has created a unique musical landscape that showcases Zimbabwe`s rich cultural diversity.
2. *Recognition and Promotion:* *
We urge the government to recognize Mbira as a valuable heritage, as designated by UNESCO, and provide platforms to showcase our music at national events like Heroes` Day and Independence Day celebrations. Through promoting authentic Mbira music, free from external influences, we can preserve Zimbabwe`s cultural identity and provide opportunities for artists to share their talents with a broader audience. To achieve this, we propose reviving the tradition of featuring Mbira music on radio stations, which was once a staple of Zimbabwean broadcasting but has sadly dwindled over time. Additionally, we suggest collaborating with UNESCO to promote Mbira music and preserve cultural heritage, organizing music festivals that celebrate Mbira and traditional Zimbabwean music, and developing cultural exchange programs to promote cross-cultural understanding and appreciation of Zimbabwean music. These initiatives will not only promote cultural awareness but also support the growth and development of Mbira music in Zimbabwe.
*Conclusion*
In conclusion, Nathan Guwa, known as Chinamhora, is a master mbira player who embodies the spirit of Zimbabwe`s rich cultural heritage. Through his group, Ngomakurira, he preserves and promotes traditional mbira music, while inspiring a new generation of musicians. Chinamhora`s journey highlights the importance of cultural preservation and the role of traditional music in shaping Zimbabwean identity. As he embarks on new musical projects, his dedication to authentic Mbira music serves as a testament to the enduring power of Zimbabwe`s cultural traditions. Through recognizing and supporting Mbira music, we can ensure the continuation of this vital part of Zimbabwe`s heritage.
