Why are UNESCO Global Geoparks important?

๐ฟAt UNESCO, biodiversity is at the core of our mandate โ because it connects not only nature and ecosystems, but also cultures, communities, knowledge and health. This week on 22 May we observed Biodiversity Day, focusing on solutions. Through initiatives like Biosphere Reserves, Intangible Cultural Heritage and Creative Cities of Gastronomy, UNESCO supports sustainable food systems that protect biodiversity and promote local knowledge and innovation. Biodiversity starts on our plate โ and protecting it means protecting our future. Learn more about our actions and programmes:https://www.unesco.org/en/biodiversity

What excites you most about the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon?

This Travel Tuesday, weโre taking a journey to the turquoise waters of the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon in Palau! ๐๐ต๐ผ Home to 445 limestone islands, this seascape features over 385 coral species, 13 types of sharks, and the worldโs highest concentration of marine lakes โ a true biodiversity hotspot! Now uninhabited, these islands hold echoes of the past. The ancient stone villages, burial sites, and rock art tell stories of communities that thrived here for thousands of years. Travel Tuesday takes us to the City of Luxembourg and its Old Quarters and Fortifications โ where history is carved into every wall! ๐ฑ๐บ๐ชจ Built on high ground between two rivers, Luxembourg was once one of Europeโs most protected cities. You can still see the old city walls, historic buildings, and tunnels dug into the rock that were used for shelter and defense. Though their purpose has changed, the old walls still shape the spirit of the city. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994, itโs a rare place where urban life and layered history meet at every turn. Learn more: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/699
