Azovstal. A steel fortress for Ukrainian defenders and civilians ๐บ๐ฆ Mariupol endured 86 days of siege from February to May 2022. As Russian bombs fell, thousands of civilians and soldiers took shelter in the Azovstal plant. Families, children, medics and soldiers stood together, side by side, resisting Russia's terror. They were bound not only by the walls of Azovstal, but also by their shared will to survive, protect each other, and hold onto their humanity in the face of Russia's cruelty. Azovstal was never just a battlefield. It became a symbol of dignity, self-organisation and the unbreakable spirit of those resisting aggression. But the suffering did not end there. Despite international guarantees, Russia took our defenders and civilians captive.ย Today, over 1,300 Azovstal defenders remain in Russian captivity. Ukraine remembers them all. We fight for them. We call on the world to join us in holding Russia accountable and demanding their release. Azovstal is our fortress of humanity. Every third Sunday of May, Ukraine commemorates the millions of lives lost to Soviet totalitarianism. It is a day to remember those who were silenced, tortured and executed without trial. Among them were writers, artists, priests, teachers and workers โ people of all professions and walks of life โ targeted not for crimes, but for their beliefs their language, or simply for being Ukrainian. From the forests of Bykivnia near Kyiv, where tens of thousands were buried in secret, to execution sites across the country โ in Kharkiv, Lviv, Odesa and beyond โ Soviet crimes remain painfully visible. These are not just statistics. They are lives, stories, names. Today, the echoes of past horrors resound once more in Ukrainian territories temporarily occupied by Russia. Ukrainians are once again facing torture, extrajudicial killings, forced deportations, filtration camps and persecution for speaking their language or refusing to submit. As Ukraine defends itself today, it is fighting not only for its territory, but also to ensure that the brutal logic of political terror is never normalised again. Let this day remind the world: the crimes of the Soviet era must never be forgotten, never repeated.
It was from here, on a tiny island in the Black Sea, that one sentence echoed across the world. In February 2022, Ukrainian border guards stationed on Snake Island responded to a Russian warship's demand to surrender with the now famous phrase: 'Russian warship, go f*** yourself'. It was the moment that embodied the Ukrainian spirit of resistance. Although temporarily occupied, the island was liberated by Ukrainian forces on 4 July 2022, after a series of precise strikes and a determined campaign. This morning, Russia launched a drone attack on a civilian minibus in Bilopillia, Sumy region. Nine people were killed. Among them - a whole family: a mother, a father and their daughter. Seven other civilians are now in hospital. Ukraine continues to call for a full and unconditional ceasefire to save lives. Russia continues to ignore these calls, opting instead for more bloodshed. Russia's terror will not stop by itself. It must be forced into peace. Stronger sanctions, more pressure, more air defences - only decisive action will save lives. When Russia invaded Crimea in 2014, Bohdan Ziza chose to resist. An artist and activist, he used peaceful protest to speak out against Russia's war and oppression. For this, Russia sentenced him to 15 years in prison. But even behind bars, Bohdan's voice was not silenced. Today, his sister Oleksandra shares his message as part of our Voices of a Just Peace campaign. Because a just peace means freedom for all political prisoners.
Anna of Kyiv โ daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, ruler of Kyivan Rus', known as the 'father-in-law of Europe'. On this day in 1051, she became Queen of France when she married King Henry I of France. Anna was highly educated: she likely spoke Old East Slavic, Latin, Greek and French, as well as her mother's native language, Swedish. She signed royal documents as 'Ana Regina' (Queen Anna), corresponded with the Pope and promoted cultural and religious life throughout France. In 1065, she founded the Abbey of Saint Vincent in Senlis, north of Paris โ her residence for many years. She last appeared in official records in 1075. Her later life remains a mystery. According to popular legend, French kings once swore oaths on the Reims Gospel, a manuscript of Slavonic origin which became part of the Reims Cathedral treasury. One theory suggests that it was brought to France by Anna as part of her dowry.

Today President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with US President Donald Trump together with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk discussing the recent Istanbul talks between Ukraine and Russia. โUkraine is ready to take the fastest possible steps to bring real peace, and it is important that the world holds a strong stance,โ President Zelenskyy stressed. โOur position โ if the Russians reject a full and unconditional ceasefire and an end to killings, tough sanctions must follow. Pressure on Russia must be maintained until Russia is ready to end the war. Thank you to everyone in the world who is helping.โ
