Henderson European and Fidelity European plan to merge to create a £2.1bn trust. While there are reasons to be concerned about the outlook for the US economy, the outlook for the consumer “is looking pretty good”, according to Jeffrey Cleveland, chief economist at Payden and Rygel. He said while there is much uncertainty around what the final outlook for US tariff policy will be, and there were signs of a gentle slowdown in the jobs market, “the hard data related to the US consumer is pretty good”. St James’s Place advisers cannot practically sell their business to a firm outside the group, despite now facing a discount of up to 45 per cent in the value of their businesses if they don’t. The drop in practice valuations is particularly impactful given the interest rate on loans made by SJP to advisers is calculated at 3.75 per cent over the Bank of England base rate. Clients of the Investec Wealth & Investment business acquired by Rathbones in April 2023 have pulled a total of £834mn of assets from the combined company over the past six months. Rathbones said one large but “low margin” client withdrew their assets. Around 90 per cent of the Investec clients have now been migrated over to the Rathbones technology and systems. US Treasuries have fallen on the back of Donald Trump’s tax cutting budget making its way through Congress and a downgrading of the US’s credit rating by Moody’s earlier this month. This could have an impact on UK mortgage rates down the line, which are already on the rise following higher than expected UK inflation data that week — but only if the Treasury yields prove to be sticky and lead to higher UK gilts as a result.
