Bonne nouvelle.

Konsèp ekonomi jounen an: pè pèdi (loss aversion). Ekonomi konpòtman moun montre jan moun pè pèdi. Plezi sa rapòte lè w fè 10 dola pa menm nivo ak doulè oswa lapèn ou santi lè w pèdi 10 dola. Pèdi a fè plis mal. Sa tèlman byen anrasine nan lespri nou, nou ka reyaji fason diferan fas ak menm sitiyasyon an an fonksyon si yo prezante w li kòm yon gany oswa kòm yon bagay w ap pèdi. Pa egzanp, eksperyans montre nou an jeneral pè pran risk fas ak yon posiblite gany.

Stevens Azima: Home and Wild Food Procurement as a Means for Regional Sufficiency, Resilience and Food Security Dr. Stevens Azima is a postdoctoral research associate in the Niles Research lab where his research will contribute to several core areas of FSRC’s agenda by benchmarking home and wild food procurement practices to assess their contribution to the region’s productive land base and food production goals evaluating their role in supporting food access during climate shocks, and identifying policy strategies that could expand access to HWFP among food-insecure and underserved populations. Azima earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Université Laval in 2023, with a dissertation on the economic and social impacts of local food systems in Canada. Originally from Haiti, where he studied agronomy, he moved to Canada in 2015 after receiving an Excellence Scholarship through the Canada’s Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program. There, he specialized in agricultural economics and developed a broad interdisciplinary skill set. To say that the situation in Haiti is concerning would be an understatement. As gang violence continues to spread across new territories, departments, and cities (Mirebalais being one of the most recent tragic examples), the number of internally displaced people is rising by the thousands, and sometimes tens of thousands, in just a matter of days. This is compounded by unspeakable acts of violence committed by gangs, and by the fact that, according to the latest IPC analysis used to track food insecurity in Haiti (April 2025), 5.7 million Haitians (more than half the population!) are facing acute food insecurity. This includes approximately 3.6 million people in Crisis (IPC Phase 3), 2.1 million in Emergency (Phase 4), and over 8,400 individuals in Catastrophe (Phase 5). Several areas are bordering famine conditions. The Kenyan-led security mission in Haiti has proven ineffective, and the Haitian state is near collapse, under-resourced, weakened, and lacking legitimacy. On top of this, over 20,000 Haitians were deported from the Dominican Republic in April alone, often in inhumane and degrading conditions. According to the latest report of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), this included an average of 30 pregnant or breastfeeding women per day. I repeat, the very existence of the Haitian state is under threat. No one should remain indifferent. Given our long and complex shared history, the United States, Canada, and France are uniquely positioned to provide strong, respectful, and effective support. Of course, this requires the political will to act and a commitment to work with Haitians themselves (including those in the diaspora), without whom no sustainable solution is possible. This is a unique and unprecedented crisis, one that bears little resemblance to the usual narratives often portrayed in the media about Haiti. Recognizing that uniqueness, I think, must be the starting point.
