From childhood, we see advertisements where a dark-skinned person is shown as sad, struggling in life. But the moment they use a fairness cream, suddenly, they become confident and successful. These companies are playing with people’s minds. They first make us feel that dark skin is a problem, and then they sell fairness creams as the solution. And people fall for this trap. In India, this problem is even worse. When a girl reaches marriage age, families first ask, ‘Is she fair-skinned?’ If she is dark, she faces rejection or is forced to pay a higher dowry. Even educated, talented, and independent women are judged for their skin color. This is not a ‘preference’—this is discrimination. Society treats dark skin as a flaw, while fairness is seen as a qualification. But who taught people this? The same capitalist system that only cares about profit.
