6. Wear protective clothing Mosquitoes are attracted to exposed skin. Wear long-sleeves, pants and socks especially in the evenings. Mosquitoes are also attracted to dark colors, so light colored clothing is better. 7. Keep doors and windows screened Use mosquito screens on all doors and windows in your home. Additionally, repair any holes in screens to prevent mosquito entry 8. Community sanitation effort Support and participate in local malaria prevention campaigns. Large scale mosquito control requires community efforts. Finally seek early treatment. Mild malaria can become severe if left untreated. If you develop fever or chills after visiting a malaria endemic zone, get tested immediately. Early treatment saves lives.

8 PROVEN WAYS TO PREVENT MALARIA With no 100% effective vaccine yet, prevention remains your best defense. 1. Sleep under an insecticide-treated net (ITN) Anopheles mosquitoes bite only at night. Sleeping under an ITN reduces your risk of being bitten by 70%. Make sure your net is properly tucked in, and free of holes. 2. Use mosquito repellents Apply mosquito repellent creams containing DEET, picaridin, or Lemon eucalyptus oil on exposed skin. You can also use mosquito coils or sprays indoors, especially in the evenings. 3. Eliminate mosquito breeding sites Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water. To reduce their population: - Empty containers hat collect water eg buckets and flowerpots - Clear blocked gutters - Cover water storage containers properly 4. Indoor residual spraying Spraying insecticides inside the house has been shown to reduce transmission of malaria significantly. 5. Take preventive medicines (Chemoprophylaxis) If traveling to malaria prone areas, take anti malarial drugs. You can start before you travel, and continue as prescribed.

HOW IS IT TREATED? Malaria is diagnosed through blood tests, which detects the parasite under a microscope or using Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs). First line treatment depends on the type of malaria: - Uncomplicated malaria: Artemisinin-based Combination therapy (ACT) is the most effective treatment for P. Falciparum. - Severe malaria: Requires IV artesunate followed by oral ACT.

Once bitten by an infected mosquito, symptoms can appear within 10-15 days, but how does this parasite cause illness? THE MALARIA LIFECYCLE - Mosquito bite: A female anopheles mosquito carrying plasmodium parasites bites a human, and injects the parasites into the blood stream. - Liver stage: The parasites travel to the liver and multiply silently. Depending on the species, this phase can last from days to weeks. - Blood stage: Parasites leave the liver and invade red blood cells, multiplying and bursting them open. This is when symptoms manifest. - Mosquito transmission: If another mosquito bites the infected person, it picks up the parasites and spreads them to others.
