The HAPPY Program, through its collaboration with Aglow Farms, is transforming lives and bringing dignity to households once burdened by poverty and unemployment. For Mavis Donkor, a mother of seven, life used to be a daily struggle. Feeding her children, seeking healthcare, and surviving each day came with deep uncertainty. โThere were days I would cry, not knowing where the next meal would come from,โ Mavis recalls. โWhen my child fell sick, I couldnโt even afford to take them to the hospital.โ That changed when Mavis joined the HAPPY Program and began working in the packaging department of Aglow Farms, a poultry processing facility supported by the initiative. โNow, I walk into the hospital with confidence when my children fall sick,โ she says with a smile. โIโve saved money on my phone. I can take care of my children.โ Beyond financial relief, Mavis has found empowerment and independence. โAglow has changed my story. Now, I wonโt let any man deceive me for moneyโI earn my own. Iโm strong, proud, and grateful.โ She isnโt alone in this transformation. In nearby Gomoa Potsin, where Aglow Farms operates, young people who once struggled to find purpose are now employed, saving, and looking ahead with hope. Lydia Tawiah, another participant of the program, shares a similar testimony: โThe work has helped me in several ways. I now have enough money to start my own business,โ she says. โI want to encourage my colleagues who are sitting idle at home to join the program.โ These are more than storiesโthey are evidence of what targeted investment in youth and women can achieve. The HAPPY Program continues to be a lifeline, igniting hope and creating pathways for sustainable livelihoods. โOn behalf of all the youth and mothers like me,โ Mavis adds, โI thank Aglow Farms and the HAPPY Project. Keep changing lives. Keep giving hope.โ #MastercardFoundation #AglowFarms #HAPPYProgram #AgriImpact

His journey began in August 2020, when a senior colleague informed him about an opportunity to work as a farmhand at greenhouses managed by Fresh Logistics and Agri-Impact Limited. Though already a graduate, Mardrack was undeterred. โI didnโt see it as a step-down. I saw it as a step forward,โ he shares. โItโs not about the degreeโitโs about passion and opportunity.โ At the time, Mardrack had already been researching the demand for fresh vegetables in Ghanaโs markets, especially among restaurants and traders. Along with a friend, he had identified potential buyersโbut lacked the means to grow the produce. So when the greenhouse opportunity came, he seized it. Despite some surprise that a university graduate would take on farmhand duties, Mardrack jumped in with enthusiasm. With training and support from management, he quickly proved himselfโnot just as a grower, but as someone with vision. Over time, he transitioned from working on the farm to leading in marketing and distribution. With his input, the Accra marketing team expanded from just three people to ten, and the results have been impressive. Farm-gate prices have seen strong growth. Mardrackโs journey from farmhand to key player in building a robust greenhouse value chain underscores the power of passion, training, and opportunity. Today, heโs not only helping farmers get better pricesโheโs feeding Ghana with quality produce and proving that agribusiness is a space where young people can lead, innovate, and thrive. #FreshLogistics #Agriimpact #FreshVegetables

The engagement took place during UHASโs Entrepreneurship Summit, hosted by the Fred N. Binka School of Public Health. The event formed part of activities leading to the launch of the universityโs 10-year Nkabom Project, aligned with the Mastercard Foundationโs Young Africa Works strategy. The Agri-Impact team included Sena Asare (Vegetable Production Specialist and Tomato Value Chain Lead), Godwin Akweiteh Allotey (Communication and Knowledge Management Lead), Hillary Kofi Adoboe, and Marcellina Ayele Kporheme. Mr. Asare led the presentation, detailing how the HAPPY Program is creating dignified and fulfilling employment for youth across the agricultural value chain. He encouraged students to consider entrepreneurship in agribusiness as a viable alternative to limited white-collar job opportunities. He also served as a panelist and judge during the Studentsโ Entrepreneurship Pitch Competition, where several teams presented innovative agribusiness ideas with strong potential for growth and impact. The HAPPY Program is a four-year initiative launched in December 2024 by the Mastercard Foundation in partnership with Agri-Impact Limited. It aims to transition 326,000 Ghanaian youth aged 15โ35 into meaningful employment within the poultry, rice, tomato, and soybean value chains. So far, the program has engaged over 165,000 youth nationwide. The visit to UHAS is part of Agri-Impactโs ongoing efforts to raise awareness and inspire youth to participate in modern, profitable, and sustainable agriculture.
