𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗺𝘀, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 As Chinese New Year approaches, scammers are working overtime to prey on unsuspecting victims. This festive season, when families are busy preparing for celebrations, scammers often strike, targeting seniors, youth, and even entire families. In Parliament, I spoke on the Protection from Scams Bill. In my speech, I emphasized that every minute counts when someone’s life savings are at stake. Residents in Yio Chu Kang have shared their frustrations with delayed follow-ups on scam cases, and it’s clear we need systems that act faster, support victims better, and rebuild trust in our ability to protect them. I also highlighted the need to make the appeals process simpler and fairer for the most vulnerable in our community, especially seniors who may not use smartphones or find it difficult to navigate technology. Grassroots networks and community support play a critical role here, ensuring no one is left behind. Prevention is just as vital as recovery—by equipping every Singaporean to be scam-wise, we can create a community of scam-fighters who safeguard themselves and their loved ones. Finally, I called for stronger regional and international efforts to tackle cross-border scams, from creating a global scam registry to working with financial institutions on shared intelligence. Scams don’t just cause financial loss—they erode confidence and leave lasting scars, especially for seniors and youth. As a community, we must act swiftly, fairly, and comprehensively to protect one another.
