Below are the significant changes announced this May that affect hiring, contracts, and employee rights within the private sector:
✔️ Only fixed-term contracts are permitted (maximum of 3 years) – unlimited contracts are no longer allowed.
✔️ A 14-day notice is mandatory for termination during the probation period.
✔️ Flexible work arrangements are now acknowledged – including full-time, part-time, freelance, temporary, and remote work.
✔️ Maternity leave has been extended to 60 days (45 days at full pay and 15 days at half pay).
✔️ Paternity leave is now 5 paid days.
✔️ Decisions made by MOHRE now carry the same legal weight as court orders.
✔️ There is a 1-year limit to file labor disputes.
✔️ Emiratization: Companies with 20 to 49 employees are required to hire 1 Emirati (2 by the end of 2025).
✔️ Termination notice must be between 30 to 90 days, or compensation is required.
These reforms signify the UAE’s commitment to fostering a fair, flexible, and inclusive work environment.
