๐ซถ๐พ Today is World Refugee Day, when we stand in solidarity with people who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution or crisis. โ ๏ธ At the end of 2024, 122.6 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide โ an increase of over 5 million compared to the year before. Refugees face unique and compounding health challenges: ๐น Disrupted access to care ๐น Exacerbated chronic illnesses ๐น Elevated mental health needs ๐น Discrimination and isolation ๐น Poor living and working conditions ๐น Linguistic and cultural barriers to services ๐ช๐ฝ Refugees bring skills, resilience and cultural enrichment. When we safeguard their well-being, we unlock their full potential and strengthen our communities in return. ๐ก Access to health care must be continuous, timely, culturally responsive and inclusive. Health workers who are trained to understand diverse needs are at the heart of building resilient, people-centred systems. Learn more and join the campaign here โก๏ธ https://bit.ly/44aYZvi

๐จ *Attention!* Please keep yourself and others safe around water. ๐ Drowning is sudden, abrupt, and shocking, with people often not realizing it's happening until it's too late. There are around 300 000 annual drowning deaths worldwide. Anyone can drown, but no one should! *Whoโs most at risk of drowning?* ๐ง๐ฝ Young children are at a particularly high risk of drowning due to an underdeveloped ability to assess risk, and a lack of swimming and water safety skills. ๐ฑ๐ผโโ๏ธ The drowning death rate among males is more than twice as high as females. Males are also more likely to be hospitalized than females for non-fatal drowning. ๐๐พโโ๏ธ Drowning disproportionately affects poor and marginalized people. Whether it be through the use of ponds, rivers or lakes for bathing and washing clothing, or using open wells for collecting water. ๐ Individuals with occupations such as commercial or subsistence fishing face a substantially higher risk of drowning. ๐ง๏ธ Climate change is causing more extreme weather events, such as floods and heatwaves. Drowning accounts for 75% of deaths in flood disasters. ๐ฃ๐ผโโ๏ธ Travelling on water, particularly in dangerous weather conditions or without appropriate safety equipment, can increase drowning risk. *How to prevent drowning?* ๐น Equip yourself and your kids with swimming skills. ๐น Always keep a close eye on kids near water. ๐น Never leave children unattended, even for a moment. ๐น Always check weather and weather conditions before swimming. ๐น Avoid drinking alcohol when supervising children. ๐น Avoid drinking alcohol when swimming. ๐น Ensure life buoys and jackets are available and used correctly. It can mean the difference between life and death for patients in need of transfusions. ๐ But access isnโt equal: Many countries struggle with chronic shortages of safe blood, especially for children and mothers. ๐ฅ Since blood cannot be stored indefinitely, there is a continuous need for regular, voluntary, unpaid donations. ๐ก Want to donate blood but not sure if youโre eligible? Hereโs what you need to know! Most healthy adults can give blood: โ You should be between 18โ65 years old. โ You should weigh at least 50 kg. โ You must feel well and not be sick on donation day. โ Your blood pressure, pulse, and haemoglobin levels will be checked before donating. ๐ The entire process is safe, quick, and rewarding. ๐ซถ๐พ One unit of safe blood can save up to 3 lives! ๐ Itโs time to turn our eyes to one of the most significant eye health threats of the 21st Century. ๐ Did you know that โshortsightednessโ or โnearsightednessโ are other names for myopia? They mean that a person can see clearly up close, but not well far away. ๐ง๐ฝ Myopia is becoming more common in young children. If a parent has myopia, their children are more likely to develop it too. ๐ Near activities are ones that involve looking at things close up, like reading a book or using a smartphone. Lots of time on these things can increase myopia risk. Here are some common myopia symptoms: ๐น Difficulty seeing things across the room and far away. ๐น Eye rubbing, squinting or closing one eye to see. ๐น Sitting too close to the TV or holding a book too close. ๐น Sore or tired eyes. These tips can help you prevent developing myopia: ๐๏ธ Spending time outdoors. ๐ฑ Holding a book or device at least 30cm from eyes. ๐ก Implementing 20-20-20 rule. Take a 20 second break to view something 20 feet away every 20 minutes of doing near activities. Regular eye exams are important! Have you already booked yours? ๐จ One of the worldโs worst hunger crises is unfolding in real time. Because of the ongoing blockade, the entire 2.1 million population of Gaza is facing prolonged food shortages. ๐ The situation of hunger, acute malnutrition, starvation, illness and death is catastrophic. ๐ People in Gaza are trapped in a dangerous cycle where malnutrition and disease fuel each other, turning everyday illness into a potential death sentence, particularly for children. Malnutrition weakens the bodies, making it harder to heal from injuries and fight off common communicable diseases like: ๐น Diarrhoea ๐น Pneumonia ๐น Measles Since the aid blockade began on 2 March 2025: ๐ถ๐ฝ 57 children have reportedly died from the effects of malnutrition, but the number is likely to be an underestimate and is likely to increase. ๐คฐ๐ฝ Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are also at high risk of malnutrition, with nearly 17 000 expected to require treatment for acute malnutrition over the next eleven months. People are dying while WHO and partnersโ life-saving medical supplies sit just outside Gaza โ ready for deployment, with safeguards in place to ensure the aid reaches those who need it most in line with humanitarian principles. โผ๏ธ WHO calls for the protection of health care and for an immediate end to the aid blockade, release of all hostages, and for a ceasefire, which leads to lasting peace.
