A few days later, they suddenly ask for an urgent loan or a favour to help them with an emergency? ๐Ÿ˜ˆ โš ๏ธ *Stay alert โ€” it is a scam!* ๐ŸšจThe Police would like to alert members of the public to a resurgence of *fake friend scam cases*, where scammers impersonate someone the victim knows via text messages (e.g. WhatsApp) or calls.๐Ÿšจ ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Since April 2025, at least 187 reports have been made, *with losses amounting to over $653,000.* ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Be cautious when contacted by unknown numbers asking you for urgent loans and unusual requests. *Monthly Scams Bulletin #6* *(6 June 2025)* In a recent spate of phishing scams, victims would encounter the scam by clicking on links embedded in: ๐Ÿ“ง๐Ÿ’ฌ *Fake Emails/Text Messages* ๐Ÿ’ป *Fake Websites* ๐Ÿ‘€ *Fake Advertisements* These links will redirect victims to phishing websites that prompt them to key in their personal and banking details, including their One-Time Passwords (OTP). Victims would only realise that they had been scammed when they discovered unauthorised transactions in their bank statements. *Look out for the signs of phishing!* ๐Ÿ“ง๐Ÿ’ฌ *Emails/Text Messages*: โœ…๏ธ Legitimate organisations use official SMS Sender IDs. *SMSes from government agencies will carry the 'gov.sg' sender ID.* ๐Ÿ’ป *Websites*: โœ…๏ธ Always check the *email address* closely and do not depend on the email sender ID that could be spoofed. ๐Ÿ‘€ *Advertisements*: โœ…๏ธ Always check directly with the company, offering the promotion on its legitimacy. *REMEMBER: Your bank log-in details are private, especially your OTP!* If you are unsure if something is a scam, call and check with the *24/7 ScamShield Helpline at 1799*. โ˜Ž๏ธ ๐Ÿ“ฐ Read the bulletin to find out more about such phishing scams and preventive measures we can take to protect ourselves.
