Half of the 10 Canadian cities “most exposed” to U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25 per cent tariffs on aluminum and steel imports — and tariffs currently paused on all Canadian goods — are located in Ontario, according to a report by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Saint John, N.B., and Calgary, Alta., would be the top two hardest hit cities followed by Windsor, Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo, Brantford and Guelph. Steeltown Hamilton is eighth on the chamber’s U.S. Tariff Exposure Index. “President Trump’s proposed tariffs will have significant consequences for the global economy — but for some of Canada’s cities, the threat is far more local and personal,” said Stephen Tapp, the chamber’s chief economist. https://www.thestar.com/business/five-of-the-top-ten-cities-impacted-by-trumps-new-tariffs-are-in-ontario-new/article_bfa59aa4-e890-11ef-8fd2-83e86e9ef275.html

The Star’s fact-check project is back and every week until election day on Feb. 27, Star reporters will monitor, track, record and correct (where needed) the three leading provincial party leaders on the campaign trail. Starting with Liberal party Leader Bonnie Crombie, who was mostly truthful but got some statistics wrong in a few of her major campaign talking points. Out of 40 claims the Star tracked in Crombie’s first week campaigning, she stretched the truth or lacked enough context that it painted an incomplete picture six times. Crombie also cited a total of nine falsehoods — including one false statement that outright misrepresented a key health-care statistic that’s plastered on the side of her big red campaign bus touring the province. https://www.thestar.com/politics/provincial-elections/bonnie-crombie-fact-check/article_3e0b68fc-e4c1-11ef-9077-c3591e79629d.html

Chris Warrilow had what most Torontonians can only dream of: a two-bedroom apartment in a walkable neighbourhood with easy transit access and friendly neighbours — all for only $1,400 a month. He’d lived there for 12 years — until June of last year, when the building at Pape and Cosburn was torn down to make way for a new station on the Ontario Line. Now the 60-year-old prop master for TV shows and movies says his rent is a lot more for a lot less — and doesn’t know if he’ll ever be able to afford to live in his old neighbourhood. https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/metrolinx-forced-him-out-of-his-1-400-a-month-home-to-make-way-for/article_bbc8489e-e243-11ef-923b-ab48552bd113.html

President Donald Trump’s tariff threats and annexationist rhetoric toward Canada has soured Canadians’ attitudes about the U.S. and its new leader, according to a new Pollara poll. A majority of Canadian respondents say they now view the U.S. in a negative light after Trump’s election win — a reversal from the sentiment a year ago, the survey of over 1,500 adult Canadians found. Furthermore, just 10 per cent of Canadians believed Trump is joking in his threats to absorb Canada and make it the 51st U.S. state — and that was before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on a hot mic that he believes Trump is serious. https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/just-1-in-10-canadians-think-trump-is-joking-about-making-canada-the-51st-state/article_d52afc4c-e891-11ef-a3c7-7f548a653f1e.html

U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements about annexing Canada are not a joke, and are driven in part by his desire to see the U.S. benefit from Canada’s critical mineral resources, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said in a series of candid comments made behind closed doors. “I suggest that not only does the Trump administration know how many critical minerals we have but that may be even why they keep talking about absorbing us and making us the 51st state,” the prime minister told a Toronto gathering of Canadian company executives, industry and union leaders on Friday morning. https://www.thestar.com/politics/donald-trump-is-not-joking-about-making-canada-the-51st-state-justin-trudeau-warns-in/article_26ba872c-e562-11ef-b4a0-bb36874cfd39.html

With the threat of punishing U.S. tariffs hanging over Canada, the city of Toronto is exploring ways to buy more domestic products, and launching a campaign urging residents to do the same. At a city council meeting Wednesday marked by patriotic speeches, members unanimously approved a plan for a “comprehensive, multi-faceted ‘Buy Local, Buy Canadian’ campaign” that would encourage residents and businesses to purchase “locally made Canadian goods and services.” According to the wording of the motion, the effort would help protect Toronto and Ontario jobs in the event U.S. President Donald Trump follows through on his proposed 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian products. https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/yes-i-spell-honour-with-a-u-toronto-council-affirms-canadian-independence-in-face-of/article_048b2722-e3cf-11ef-b0d5-ff47b1d1f62e.html

Toronto’s rat population is growing faster than the rodents of New York City, Chicago or Amsterdam, according to a new study, illuminating how climate change and urbanization are turbo-charging rat growth in the absence of effective control strategies. Residents who have complained for years about a perceived rodent surge now have peer-reviewed evidence, published in the journal Science Advances on Friday, that lays bare the scale of Toronto’s problem. Of the 16 cities analyzed, Toronto had the third-fastest growing rat population. City officials have been tasked to produce a rat strategy by later this year, after two previous efforts were shelved. Currently, Toronto does not have a dedicated department or officer in charge of tackling its booming rat population. https://www.thestar.com/news/toronto-is-finally-beating-new-york-at-something-rat-growth-a-new-study-reveals-a/article_1f1f8210-ddb5-11ef-83f6-7320220a723a.html

Canada is on the other end of the Atlantic — but that still might not stop it from becoming the 28th member state of the European Union, some experts believe. As U.S. President Donald Trump‘s talk of tariffs and annexation continues to sour U.S.-Canada relations, some — including, reportedly, Germany’s former foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel — have floated the idea of Canada joining the EU. Supporters of the idea have cited the EU’s need for minerals and other natural resources, of which Canada has plenty. The two also share similar views on governance, social issues and the climate crisis. While an interesting thought experiment, Canada becoming an EU member state remains highly improbable, experts in foreign affairs said. https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/donald-trump-is-driving-a-wedge-between-canada-and-the-united-states-could-we-join/article_1d00895c-dda1-11ef-a59f-f76e89591126.html

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says U.S. tariffs will be paused after a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. Trudeau said he laid out Canada’s border plan and that Canada is making new commitments, including appointing a “fentanyl czar,” and adding Mexican cartels to the list of terrorist entities. He said Canada will keep an eye on the border “24/7” and launch with the United States, a joint strike force on organized crime, fentanyl trafficking and money laundering. https://www.thestar.com/politics/federal/donald-trump-tariffs-canada-responds/article_2b6b2f68-e230-11ef-b18e-f33fde2a2aeb.html

With U.S. President Donald Trump expected to sign new executive orders Monday imposing a 25 per cent tariff on steel and aluminum imports, industry experts say it will hurt businesses on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border, and push prices higher. “This will be purely inflationary,” said Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association, of the tariffs Trump has threatened several times to impose. “This will make cars more expensive everywhere.” https://www.thestar.com/business/trump-s-steel-and-aluminum-tariffs-would-boost-inflation-hit-businesses-on-both-sides-of/article_2b55cb04-e7c2-11ef-bbec-3bc0f82bc5a9.html
