We are so excited to have our participatory photography project, “Things We Left Unseen,” in partnership with Wellcome Trust, displayed alongside the top 25 entries at the Wellcome photography prize exhibition. Seventeen young people from Khayelitsha participated in image-making workshops exploring health, daily life and well-being in their community. The participants' photographs and personal texts offer a youth-led view of issues including mental health, water access, sanitation, housing and environmental change. These stories speak to the resilience, pride and everyday life challenges in one of South Africa’s most dynamic and complex townships. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the project, including Prof.Esmita Charani, Dr Sipho Dlamini and IkamvaYouth SA https://www.facebook.com/share/1RKyML1XSR/?mibextid=wwXIfr

In collaboration with Isivivana Centre To honour Youth Month 🙌🏾, our First Friday Poetry Jam session unpacked the impact of Artificial Intelligence 🤖 on young minds 🧠. Through discussions and open conversations 🎤🗣️, we reflected on how AI is shaping the way young people think, learn, and express themselves. We questioned the dangers of over-dependence 🧍🏾‍♂️➡️💻, the erosion of original thought 💭, and the ways technology can distance us from our own creativity 🎨. At the same time, we recognised AI's potential in education 📚 and expression 📝. We spoke about ways we, as the youth, can shape the future 🔮 rather than be shaped by it. Thank you to everyone who showed up and shared their thoughts.👏 https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1AZdZ8RCEe/?mibextid=wwXIfr

On 16 June, in partnership with Vuka Research Clinic we hosted the second Youth Day Debate to commemorate National Youth Day. This year’s topic was “A life Beyond Foreign aid. We invited young people to reflect on whether South Africa🇿🇦 should continue to rely on international support or move towards self-sufficiency🌍💸. Two teams of young debaters tackled the question from opposing sides. One group made the case for continued aid, highlighting existing inequalities and resource gaps. The other group challenged this view, emphasising the need for long-term independence and stronger local systems. The audience was filled with young people from Khayelitsha and Gugulethu in Cape Town, who actively engaged in the conversation by interacting with the debaters and sharing their reflections during the open floor discussions🧠🔥. Amelia Mfiki opened the session by offering historical and current context around international aid in the country. The debate was chaired by Khanyisa Vedala, who kept the conversation focused and engaging throughout. This debate is part of our ongoing effort to create spaces where young people can critically engage with complex social and health issues. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1DsNhZQikF/?mibextid=wwXIfr

We’re excited to have been selected as one of the #TrinityChallenge Youth Funding Competition Winners. Our campaign is focused on addressing antimicrobial resistance in the Xhora mouth region of the rural Eastern Cape, where livestock plays a vital role in cultural ceremonies and economic survival. We will gather and distribute knowledge about the risks of AMR by promoting responsible antibiotic use. Through local youth-based documentary film productions, local radio broadcasts, community dialogue workshops, and community healthcare workers (Nomakhaya), we aim to enhance the cultural relevance and accessibility of scientific knowledge in AMR. We’ll be working closely with the Bulungula Incubator, a well-respected NPO that has been operating in the Xhora Mouth region for over 20 years and whose partnership is critical for the success of the project. AMR research scientists who will also provide support include Prof Esmita Charani, a Wellcome Career Development Fellow at the University of Cape Town and her broader team. And Prof Helen McIIIeron, also at UCT and lead of AMRoots, a project that we are already contributing public engagement work to and a 2024 Trinity Challenge Prize Winner. We look forward to working with the community at Xhora Mouth to tackle the #AntibioticEmergency through improved biosecurity. #TTCYouth Watch video here: @trinitycchallenge @esmitacharani @bulungula incubator https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1AcwkzXmyg/?mibextid=wwXIfr

PART 2: What does AMR have to do with us? Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is closer to home than you think! 🏥💊 It doesn’t just affect hospitals or faraway places; it impacts our families, communities, and everyday lives. When bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, common infections become harder and more expensive. 💸💉 It means longer hospital stays, more complications, and a higher risk of spreading serious illness. And here’s the thing: AMR doesn’t respect borders. 🌍✈️ It travels fast, and no country is safe from its reach. We all have a role to play. Stay informed, use antibiotics wisely, and join the global fight to stop AMR in its tracks. 💪🌎 AMR series part 03 is coming up next week, on Friday.
