*Shaykh al-Islam Taqī al-Dīn ibn Taymiyyah al-Hanbalī (d. 728 AH):* As for the 15th night of Sha'ban (Shab-e-Baraat), there is indeed virtue associated with it, and the Salaf used to pray on this night. However, congregating in the mosque for this night, with the intention of passing the night there, is an innovation (Bid'ah). (That is, the individual practice of the Salaf was to pray on this night, but there was no collective practice of gathering for worship in congregation for this night.) Allah knows best. (Mustadrak Majmu'ah Fatawa Ibn Taymiyyah, Vol. 3, p. 112)

Coined as the Mujtahid of the Era (Mujtahid al-Asr), Ahl-e-Hadith scholar Hafidh Abdullah Ropadi states: > “It is virtuous (afdhal) to fast on Shab-e-Bara’at, and there is a hadith about it in Mishkaat and other books. Although the hadith is da‘īf, it is permissible to act upon a da‘īf hadith in Fadhail al-A‘maal (virtues of deeds).” [Fatāwa ‘Ulamā-e-Ahl-e-Hadīth 2/552]

عن أبي موسى الأشعري عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال إن الله ليطلع في ليلة النصف من شعبان فيغفر لجميع خلقه إلا لمشرك أو مشاحن Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, Allah looks down on the night of the middle of Sha'ban and forgives all His creation, except for a polytheist or one who harbors enmity (against others)." The renowned 3rd-century historian, Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Abbas Faakihi Makki (d. 275 Hijri), dedicated a chapter in his historical book "Akhbaar-e-Makkah" with the title: *"The Practice of the People of Makkah on the 15th of Sha'ban and Their Striving on That Night Due to Its Virtue."* He then writes: "From the past until his time, whenever the 15th night of Sha'ban arrived, the men and women of Makkah would go to Masjid al-Haram, pray Salah, perform Tawaf, and engage in worship throughout the night. They would recite the Qur'an until dawn, completing its full recitation, and offering prayers. Some among them would pray 100 rak‘ahs, reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas ten times in each rak‘ah after Surah Al-Fatiha. They would also drink Zamzam water and bathe with it, seeking the blessings of this night. There are numerous hadiths narrated regarding this matter.” _(Akhbaar-e-Makkah, Vol. 3, p. 84)_

Great Muhaddith of the Ghair Muqallideen, Allama Abdur Rahman Mubarakpuri (Rahimahullah), mentioned several hadiths regarding the virtues of the 15th night of Sha'ban in his book Tohfatul Ahwazi. He compiled narrations from different hadith collections, including those reported by: 1. Hazrat Aisha (Radiallahu Anha) 2. Mu’adh bin Jabal (Radiallahu Anhu) 3. Abdullah bin Umar (Radiallahu Anhu) 4. Kaseer bin Murrah (Radiallahu Anhu) 5. Hazrat Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) After mentioning these narrations, he concluded with his verdict: *"So, these hadiths, when taken collectively, serve as proof (Hujjat) against those who claim that nothing is authentically established regarding the virtue of the 15th of Sha'ban. And Allah knows best."* (Tohfatul Ahwazi, Vol. 3, p. 441-442)

*The Problem with Lā-Madhhabī Thought* A challenging phenomenon that arises from the viewpoint of those who claim that following one of the four established schools of jurisprudence—Ḥanafī, Mālikī, Shāfiʿī & Ḥanbalī—is misguidance (ḍalāl) or an innovation (bidʿah) is that this viewpoint implies that every Muslim should formulate an independent legal opinion for every ruling. This, eventually, risks blurring the line between the roles of laypersons and scholars in Islam. Their expectation that every Muslim should formulate independent views undermines expertise and scholarly traditions. It seeks to elevate laypeople to the status of scholars and reduce scholars to that of laypersons. The intricate structure of jurisprudence (fiqh) demands exhaustive training and deep understanding, which should not be reasonably expected from every individual. Muslim communities navigate their obligations and recommendations much more healthily if they have the option to follow scholars, known as taqlīd. Proponents of this view have made lives difficult and, consequently, they have seen very little success in promoting it among the public, which—in my humble opinion—also reflects resistance to the tradition structured by Sunnī scholars for centuries. If someone says to you, “There is no such thing as a madhhab!” or “Was the Prophet ﷺ a Shāfiʿī or Ḥanbalī?!” or “Taqlīd is shirk!” you can respectfully ignore that person. Your life will be much easier in following the vast majority of scholars who believe in the permissibility of following a scholar without formulating your own personal view on every single legal issue.

The Ahle Hadees Muhaddith Shams ul Haq Azeembadi rh states: 'As for reciting the Holy Quran, making prescribed supplications, performing authentic adhkār, offering voluntary prayers in the early part of the night without congregation during the middle night of Sha'ban... and seeking forgiveness from Allah, requesting His mercy, making personal supplications, and crying while making these supplications - none of these acts are innovations (bid’ah). Rather, they are MEANS OF EARNING GREAT REWARD AND RECOMPENSE.'" (Fatawa Maulana Shamsul Haq Azeembadi: Page 181)

The Ghair Muqallid Muhaddith and Muhaqqiq, Ubaidullah Mubarakpuri, after mentioning the hadiths regarding the virtues of the 15th night of Sha'ban (Shab-e-Baraat) in his commentary on Mishkat, writes: *"All these hadiths indicate the greatness and majesty of the 15th night of Sha'ban and also prove that _this night is not like other nights_ . Therefore, being negligent about it is inappropriate; rather, staying awake in worship, supplication, dhikr, and fikr on this night is Mustahab (recommended).”* _(Mir'aat Sharh Mishkat, Vol. 4, p. 341-342)_
