*Grassland fire near JKIA quickly extinguished, Flights unaffected.*
A fire broke out on Wednesday evening in a grassland area surrounding Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Emergency services responded swiftly, and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) assured the public that the incident did not affect flight operations or airport infrastructure.
The fire ignited in the grassland along Airport North Road, raising concerns about potential disruptions. However, a coordinated effort by the KAA Airport Rescue & Fire Fighting Service, the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), and the Nairobi County Fire Unit successfully contained the blaze before it could spread to critical airport zones.
KAA confirmed that all airport activities, including flight schedules, passenger processing, and cargo handling, remained fully operational. There were no reported injuries or damage to airport facilities.
This is not the first time JKIA has experienced a fire incident. On March 25, 2024, a fire caused by an electrical fault broke out at Terminal 1E, leading to a temporary shutdown of the terminal. The fire resulted in power outages affecting international arrivals, forcing operations to be redirected to Terminal 1A.
However, the most significant fire in the airport’s history occurred on August 7, 2013. A massive blaze engulfed two of the three units in the main terminal building, causing the suspension of all flight operations. While no fatalities were recorded, two individuals suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Incoming flights were diverted to other regional airports as authorities worked to restore services.
